What Is Sports Massage?
Sports massage is a form of soft tissue therapy aimed at people who put their bodies under regular physical load. It borrows strokes from Swedish and deep tissue massage but chooses where to work, how hard and for how long based on your activity, your training week and what is coming up next.
What sets it apart is the assessment and the stretching. Before starting, your therapist asks what you do and may check how freely a joint moves; during the session, they combine hands-on work with stretches in which they move the limb for you while you relax or push gently against them.
Sports Massage Techniques
| Technique | What happens | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Effleurage and petrissage | Flowing strokes, then kneading, to warm the tissue | Opening every session and every area |
| Compression | Rhythmic pumping pressure with the palm or fist | Large muscles such as quads and glutes, often before events |
| Soft tissue release (STR) | The therapist pins one point of a muscle while you move the joint, lengthening it under their hand | Hamstrings, calves, forearms |
| Muscle energy technique (MET) | You push gently against the therapist's resistance for a few seconds, relax, then the stretch goes a little further | Hips, hamstrings, shoulders |
| Trigger point pressure | Steady pressure on a tender spot that refers discomfort elsewhere | Upper back, calves, glutes |
| Assisted stretching | The therapist takes the limb through a stretch while you stay passive | Any muscle group you load heavily |
Pre-Event, Post-Event and Maintenance
Sports massage changes with the calendar. Tell us when you book which of these you need and the date of any event.
| Type | Timing | Approach | Aim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-event | The day before, or the morning of the event | Short, brisk and light: compression, quick strokes, gentle mobility | Feeling loose and ready, never heavy or sore |
| Post-event | Once you have cooled down, eaten and rehydrated, or over the next few days | Slow, light flushing strokes at first; deeper work only after a few days | Comfort, and less stiffness in the following days |
| Maintenance | Regularly through a training block | Firmer, detailed work plus stretching on the areas that tighten | Keeping training comfortable between key sessions |
Our rule of thumb is no deep, heavy work in the two days before a race, because it can leave muscles tender when you need them fresh. Deep maintenance sessions belong earlier in the week or earlier in your build-up.
What the Research Says
Sports massage is one of the most studied recovery methods. The honest summary: it helps you feel better after hard exercise, but there is no good evidence it makes you faster or stronger.
Soreness and fatigue
A 2018 meta-analysis in Frontiers in Physiology pooled 99 studies of recovery methods, including cold-water immersion, compression garments, stretching and active recovery. Massage showed the largest effect of any single technique on delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and on perceived fatigue (Dupuy et al., 2018).
Performance
A 2020 review in BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine analysed 29 randomised trials with 1,012 participants. Sports massage gave a small improvement in flexibility and about a 13% reduction in DOMS, but no measurable effect on strength, sprint, jump or endurance performance (Davis et al., 2020).
Both reviews note that the trials were small and varied, and soreness is a self-reported measure. In plain terms: book sports massage because your legs will feel better on Tuesday, not because it will take minutes off your marathon time.
Sports Massage by Activity
Your therapist concentrates on the muscles your sport works hardest. Typical priorities:
| Activity | Areas usually worked |
|---|---|
| Running | Calves, Achilles area, hamstrings, quads, hip flexors, glutes, plantar fascia |
| Cycling | Quads, hip flexors, glutes, lower back, neck and upper back from the riding position |
| Football, rugby and hockey | Hamstrings, groin (adductors), calves, hips |
| Swimming | Shoulders, upper back (lats), chest, neck |
| Tennis, squash and padel | Forearms, shoulders, upper back, calves |
| Strength training and CrossFit | Whatever you trained this week: often chest, shoulders, quads and glutes |
| Climbing and rowing | Forearms, upper back, lats, hips |
You do not need to compete. Many of our sports massage clients are people who run a few times a week, play five-a-side, go to the gym or do physically demanding work, and want treatment shaped around that load rather than a general relaxation massage.
Planning Around London Races
London has a packed running calendar, with the London Marathon every April and the Royal Parks Half Marathon every October, plus half marathons, 10Ks and weekly parkruns in between. A simple plan for a target race:
During the training block
A maintenance session every two to four weeks, timed after a long run or on a rest day.
Race week
A final firmer session no later than five days before; after that, keep it light.
The day before
An optional short, light session, at your hotel if you are visiting London for the race.
Race evening
Gentle flushing work only; save anything firmer for later in the week.
Two to four days later
A fuller recovery session, once the worst soreness has passed.
Because we come to you, there is no tube journey to a clinic on legs that have just run 26.2 miles.
Safety: When Sports Massage Needs a Professional Check First
Sports massage is for muscles that are tired, tight or sore from use. It is not a way to diagnose or treat an injury, and some situations need a physiotherapist or GP before any massage.
See a GP or physiotherapist first if you have:
- a new sprain, strain or tear, especially with swelling, bruising or heat, in roughly the last 72 hours;
- pain that is sharp, worsening, or present at rest or at night;
- a possible stress fracture, such as pinpoint bone pain in the shin or foot;
- calf pain with swelling, redness or warmth, which can be a sign of a blood clot and needs urgent medical advice;
- numbness, tingling or weakness in an arm or leg;
- a recent concussion or head injury.
Mention when you book if you have: blood-thinning medication, a bleeding disorder, recent surgery, diabetes, varicose veins, a skin infection, or a pregnancy. Your therapist will adapt the treatment or advise checking with your doctor.
If a physiotherapist is already treating you, tell us what they have advised. Massage can work alongside their plan, but should not cut across it.

| Length | Covers | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 60 minutes | One or two regions in detail, such as legs and hips | Maintenance for one sport; post-race legs |
| 90 minutes | Lower body and back, with time for stretching | Runners and cyclists in a heavy block; most clients |
| 120 minutes | Whole body, plus extended stretching | Multi-sport athletes, triathletes, or after a big event |
For a pre-event session, 60 minutes is plenty.
Sports, Deep Tissue or Thai?

Sports Massage FAQs
Should I shower after training before the therapist arrives?
If you can, yes. It is more comfortable for you, and oil or cream glides more evenly on clean skin. If time is tight, tell us and your therapist will work around it.
What should I wear?
Shorts are ideal, because your therapist can reach your hips and thighs and move your legs through stretches. Underwear is fine too; you stay covered with towels throughout.
Is a sports massage therapist the same as a physiotherapist?
No. Physiotherapist is a protected title in the UK, regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council, and physiotherapists can diagnose and rehabilitate injuries. Sports massage therapists work on soft tissue for comfort and recovery, and refer you on when something needs a diagnosis.
Is sports massage painful?
Parts can be intense, particularly on tight calves or hamstrings, but it should never be more than you are comfortable with. Tell your therapist and they will ease off straight away.
Is a massage gun just as good?
A massage gun is handy for quick self-treatment between sessions, but it can only press. A therapist can also stretch you, adjust to how each muscle responds, and notice when something feels like more than ordinary tightness.
Can a sports massage replace my stretching or foam rolling?
No, it works best alongside them. Your own mobility work keeps things moving day to day; a professional session lets someone else reach areas you cannot and work on them in more detail.
