What Is a Hot Oil Massage?

Hot oil massage, also called warm oil massage, is any massage in which the oil is heated before it is applied. Underneath the warmth, the technique is a familiar Western oil massage: long gliding strokes, kneading and, if you want it, slower, deeper pressure on tight areas.

It is not hot stone massage. Hot stone massage uses heated basalt stones placed on and moved over the body; hot oil massage uses warm oil and the therapist’s hands only. It is also different from a hot oil hair treatment, which is a scalp and hair conditioning treatment rather than a massage.

Where Warm Oil Massage Comes From

Warm oil massage is central to abhyanga, the daily oil massage of Ayurveda, India’s traditional system of medicine. In abhyanga, warm oil, often sesame-based, is applied generously over the whole body with long strokes, as both self-care and therapy; it remains closely associated with Kerala in south-west India. Our hot oil massage borrows the warmth, not the Ayurvedic theory: it is a Western massage with warmed oil.

How We Warm the Oil

Warmed before your session

The oil is heated in advance so it is ready when the massage begins.

Tested before it touches you

Your therapist checks the temperature on their own skin first, every time.

Kept comfortably warm

It should feel noticeably warmer than your skin, like slipping into a warm bath, and never hot enough to sting.

You set the limit

If it ever feels too warm, say so; your therapist lets it cool before carrying on.

Our therapists use two types of massage table, both from Earthlite: the Infinity and the Vibra-Therm, which can heat the table surface. If you would like warmth from below as well, ask whether a heated table is available when you book.

Which Oils Are Used Warm?

Different traditions warm different oils:

OilWhere it is used warmCharacter
SesameThe classic base for Ayurvedic abhyangaRich and slow to absorb
CoconutCommon in south Indian and Thai oil massageLight; solid when cold, so it must be warmed
Sweet almondA traditional Western massage baseSmooth, with good glide; not suitable for nut allergies
JojobaModern spa blendsTechnically a liquid wax; light and stable when heated

We use finished body oils rather than raw carrier oils, so the texture, scent and ingredients are always the same. Tell us about any allergies, including nut allergies, when you book.

What Warmth Does

Heat on the skin widens the small blood vessels near the surface, which is why skin looks a little pink and feels warm after a hot oil massage. Most people also find warmth helps muscles feel easier to work on and makes it easier to relax, particularly if they tend to feel cold lying still.

What the Research Says

No study has compared warm oil with room-temperature oil in an otherwise identical massage, so any claim that the warmth itself treats anything is unproven. The nearest evidence:

Warm oil massage and stress

A 2011 pilot study gave 20 healthy adults a single one-hour abhyanga warm oil massage. Their self-rated stress and heart rate fell afterwards. There was no control group, so the authors called the results promising and asked for more rigorous research (Basler, 2011).

Heat and back pain

A Cochrane review of nine trials with 1,117 people found moderate evidence that heat wrap therapy gives a small, short-term reduction in acute and subacute low back pain (French et al., 2006). Heat wraps deliver hours of steady heat, far more than warm oil, so this does not show that hot oil massage relieves back pain.

What we can say honestly: warm oil makes a massage feel more comforting, and that is why people book it.

Choose Your Pressure

StyleWhat it feels likeBuilt on
GentleLong, slow, flowing strokes with plenty of warm oilThe strokes of a Swedish massage at home
MediumFlowing strokes plus kneading on shoulders, back and legsA classic full-body oil massage
FirmSlower, deeper pressure on tight spots, still with warm oilThe techniques of a deep tissue massage at home

Tell your therapist your preference at the start, and change it as often as you like.

Who Hot Oil Massage Suits

Hot oil massage is a good choice if you:

  • often feel cold during a massage, or are booking on a cold, damp London evening;
  • find warmth relaxes you faster than anything else;
  • want firm pressure but find it easier to take when the oil is warm;
  • have dry skin and like the softness oil leaves behind.

When Warm Oil Is Not Right

Warmth needs more care in a few situations. Let us know at booking if you:

  • have reduced feeling in the skin, for example from diabetes or nerve damage, because you may not notice if the oil is too warm;
  • have a new injury, strain or swelling from the last few days, when heat can make swelling worse;
  • have sunburn, broken skin, a rash or a flare of eczema, psoriasis or rosacea;
  • are pregnant;
  • have low blood pressure, or tend to feel faint in heat;
  • have a fever or feel unwell;
  • have varicose veins or a circulation problem.

Your therapist can lower the temperature, work around an area, or switch to room-temperature oil.

Your Hot Oil Massage, Step by Step

Booking

Message on WhatsApp day or night, choose a length and a therapist, then pay in full and the slot is yours.

Warm room

Turn the heating up a little before your therapist arrives; warm oil feels best in a warm room.

Set-up and consultation

Your therapist sets up the table, warms the oil, and asks about pressure, health and allergies.

Temperature check

A small amount on your back or arm first, so you can say whether it is right.

The massage

Your whole body, usually starting with the back, with fresh warm oil added as the session goes on.

Finish

You rest under the towels while your therapist packs away.

After Your Massage

Stay warm

Put on something cosy rather than stepping straight into a cold room.

Get up slowly

Warmth plus relaxation can make some people light-headed for a moment.

Leave the oil on or shower it off

Leave the oil on or shower it off whichever you prefer; a quick shower removes any residue.

Avoid a sauna or a very hot bath

Avoid a sauna or a very hot bath straight afterwards; your body has had enough heat for now.

Hot Oil Massage FAQs

Is a hot oil massage messier than a normal oil massage?

No. The amount of oil is the same; only the temperature changes. The table is covered with our own linen, and towels keep you covered throughout.

Can I have a hot oil massage around a spray tan?

Oil can lift a fresh tan unevenly, so have the massage before tanning, or wait a few days after it.

Can I have a hot oil massage in summer?

Yes. Some people like the warmth all year, and the temperature can be turned down on hot days. On a heatwave night, you may prefer room-temperature oil.

Is hot oil massage good before bed?

Many clients book it in the evening for that reason. Warmth and slow strokes make it easy to go straight to sleep afterwards.

Can I choose hot oil for a couples massage?

Yes. Book a couples massage at home and either or both of you can have warm oil.

Is it suitable after sport?

Once you have cooled down and there is no fresh injury, yes. For massage planned around training and events, mobile sports massage is more targeted.
